Charley's Aunt

This classic evergreen farce is set in Oxford during the 1890s. The imminent visit of Charles Wykeham's aunt from Brazil, Donna Lucia, provides an excuse for Charles and Jack to invite their young ladies to meet her. When a telegram arrives postponing Donna Lucia's visit, they persuade their amiable friend Babbs to impersonate the aunt - and the fun really begins.

Requirements:
Roles Available: CHARACTERS - DESCRIPTION & AGES

JACK CHESNEY (Stage age 20-35): Student at St. Olde's College, Son of Sir Francis, in love with Kitty. Sets the pace of the play by his energy and confidence.

BRASSETT (Stage age 30-60): Manservant to Jack. Put-upon superior butler type, enormously dignified and always calmly in command of the situation. Indulgent towards the wildness of the young, and quietly proud of them.

CHARLEY WYKEHAM (Stage age 20-35): Student at St. Olde's College, Best friend to Jack, in love with Amy. A kind of junior partner to Jack, not quite so sure of himself, a little ingenuous, but not a fool.

LORD FANCOURT BABBERLEY (Stage age 20-35): Student at St. Olde's College, friend to Jack and Charley. Experienced and gifted comic actor required. He spends most of his time disguised as Charley's aunt but not a brilliant female impersonation. He still walks, talks, sits and moves like a man. He tries to lighten his voice when he is first introduced, and it cracks appallingly. After that he speaks naturally, but takes care not to use his deeper tones except to those who know who he is, or when he forgets that he is supposed to be a woman.

SIR FRANCIS CHESNEY (Stage age 40-60): A Colonel who served in India, father to Jack. A smart man, not at all a figure to make fun of.

STEPHEN SPETTIGUE (Stage age 45-70): Solicitor, uncle to Amy and guardian of Kitty. In contrast with Sir Francis. He is the crusty older man, crabbing the young and making himself ridiculous by indulging in a travesty of youtliful love. He is usually furious, but he can be pleasant.

DONNA-LUCIA D'ALVADOREZ (Stage age 40-60): A charming lady from Argentina, Aunt to Charley (although they have never met), adopted Aunt of Ela. She should be played gaily, with a light, firm touch. Donna Lucia is much amused by her impersonator and by the situation he has created. She dominates the scenes where she appears, but her general attitude is benevolent.

AMY SPETTIGUE (Stage age 15-25): Proper young lady, love interest of Charley, Niece of Stephen Spettigue. Like-able girl, just as quick-witted as the young men, and a little more capable and practical in overcoming the obstacles to their love affair.

KITTY VERDUN (Stage age 15-25): Proper young lady, love interest of Jack, Stephen Spettigue's Ward. Like-able girl, just as quick-witted as the young men, and a little more capable and practical in overcoming the obstacles to their love affair.

ELA DELAHAY (Stage age 15-25): Proper young lady, Adopted niece of Donna-Lucia D’Alvadorez. unaffected, pleasant young girl.
