The story follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. |

Baker’s Wife
Mezzo: G3 – F5 Clever, shrewd, and determined, with a romantic heart and a longing for something more. A frustrated housewife who’s both motherly and materialistic at times. Requires strong acting and vocal ability. Witch Mezzo or Sop: F3 – F5 A powerful, unpredictable force—vain, sarcastic, and commanding on the outside, yet insecure and lonely beneath the surface. Must transform physically and emotionally. Strong actor/singer. Cinderella Soprano: G3 – G5 Kind-hearted and dreamlike but indecisive and uncertain of what she wants. A gentle soul trying to find her voice. Must balance warmth with naivety. Strong actor/singer. Little Red Riding Hood Bright belter: B3 – F5 Spoiled, outspoken, and sarcastic, yet lacking real affection. A bratty, brazen character who learns and matures. A comic role requiring excellent timing and strong belt vocals. Can be played by a teen or young adult. Rapunzel Soprano: A3 – A#5 A sweet but misguided maiden, sheltered from the world. Earnest and naive, with strong legit soprano vocals. Needs vulnerability and sincerity. Jack’s Mother Soprano: B3 – F#5 A stressed, overbearing, well-meaning mother doing her best. Frantic, fretful, and determined to protect her son at all costs. Mature actor preferred. Cinderella’s Stepmother Mezzo: A#3 – F5 A cold, petty, and controlling woman. The perfect fairytale villain with comic cruelty. Strong character actor. Lucinda Mezzo: C4 – E5 Cinderella’s stepsister—vain, noisy, and gleefully mean. Needs comic energy and bold physicality. Often paired with Florinda. Florinda Mezzo: C4 – E5 The second stepsister—equally shallow, loud, and dramatic. Comic duo with Lucinda. Must have over-the-top energy and commitment. Cinderella’s Mother Soprano: G3 – Ab5 Nurturing, loving. The spirit of the departed mother, dispenses useful advice. Must have strong legit singing voice. (May double w/other minor role) Granny - Open - Red Riding Hood’s feisty, bitter, vindictive grandmother, good comic timing. No solo singing, only in ensemble. He must grow into his courage and leadership. Honest and sincere, with a lot of stage time and emotional depth. Strong actor/singer. Jack Tenor: A2 – G4 An eager, bright-eyed youth with big dreams and little awareness. Mischievous, innocent, and impulsive. Must have a pure tenor tone and a childlike sincerity. Can be a teen or young adult. Cinderella’s Prince Baritone: Bb2 – Gb4 Vain, dashing, and entirely self-absorbed. The embodiment of charm without depth. Comedic timing essential. (Can double as the Wolf.) Rapunzel’s Prince Baritone: C#3 – Gb4 Just as pompous and dramatic as his older brother, but constantly trying to outshine him. Proud and statuesque with legit baritone vocals. Wolf Baritone: B2 – Gb4 A lascivious, unsettling predator full of comedic menace and seductive danger. Brief stage time but leaves a lasting impression. (May double as Cinderella’s Prince.) Mysterious Man Baritone: G3 – E4 An odd, ghost-like figure harboring secrets—specifically that he is the Baker’s father. Tired, cowed, and erratic. Mostly acting with one major musical moment. (Can double as Narrator.) Narrator Baritone: G3 – Eb4 A confident, intellectual storyteller who guides the audience through the tale. Observational and detached, yet personable. Mainly a spoken role with occasional singing. Steward - Open - Surly, bureaucratic, full of self-importance. No solo singing, only ensemble. Plenty of good lines. Cinderella’s Father - Open - Ineffectual, out of touch with family, but harmless and well-meaning. No solo singing, only ensemble. |
