6 PRINCIPALS / 12 FEATURED / 8 FEMALE ENSEMBLE / 6 CHILDREN’S CHORUS
NARRATOR – An actress with a strong rock-singing voice (high belt to E, full-range Mezzo) who excels at comedy and moves well. Will not double in another role. A character not of the time or place of the action. The Narrator tells the story through word and song, guiding the audience gently through Joseph and his brothers' story, usually giving it meaning with their words JOSEPH – Tenor. The eleventh son of Jacob. His father’s favorite, Joseph early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. This gets him into trouble with his brothers when he predicts he will rule over the other eleven. However, it saves his life when in Egypt he correctly interprets Pharaoh’s dreams. In the end, he rises to a great position of power, but he still forgives his brothers and brings his family to Egypt to share in the bounty he has accumulated there. Will not double in another role. JACOB – An actor in his 50s/60s with a baritone voice. Father of twelve sons; his favorite is Joseph. At times he may seem unfair and shallow, but he is, more importantly, the prophet who recognizes Joseph's future and calling, saving the House of Israel. Will double for Potiphar. JOSEPH’S BROTHERS – Although they usually act as a group, each has their own personalities, talents, and flaws. As a group, they sell Joseph into slavery, but as individuals, they deal with the following years and how they can make amends. They sing and dance their way through many situations and places. The brothers also double as Egyptians and servants of Potiphar. Eleven brothers with strong singing voices, the ability to dance, and contrasting body types and ethnicities. Requires featured solo brothers for Country and Western style in “One More Angel in Heaven,” Jacques Brel/Maurice Chevalier style for “Those Canaan Days,” two brothers to double the BUTLER and BAKER, an island-vibe style for “Benjamin Calypso,” and a strong dancer with partnering ability (Adagio) in “The Apache.” REUBEN – Eldest son of Jacob; lead singer for “Those Canaan Days” SIMEON – Second son of Jacob LEVI – Third son of Jacob; lead singer for “One More Angel in Heaven” JUDAH – Fourth son of Jacob; sings Harry Belafonte-style in “Benjamin Calypso” DAN – Fifth son of Jacob; doubles Baker NAPHTALI – Sixth son of Jacob GAD – Seventh son of Jacob ASHER – Eighth son of Jacob; doubles Butler ISSACHAR – Ninth son of Jacob ZEBULUN – Tenth son of Jacob BENJAMIN – Youngest brother; Joseph accuses him of stealing the golden cup. POTIPHAR – A Noel Coward-type character. Baritone. A powerful, wealthy Egyptian, Potiphar buys Joseph and puts him to work in his household, where he soon realizes Joseph is honest, hardworking, and a great addition to his staff. However, when he grows suspicious of Mrs. Potiphar and Joseph, Potiphar becomes angry and has Joseph thrown into prison. Will be played by the actor playing JACOB. MRS. POTIPHAR – Alto/Mezzo with strong dancing skills and flexibility. Beautiful but evil, Mrs. Potiphar tries to seduce Joseph but fails. However, she does manage to rip off much of his clothing just as her husband comes into the room, thus condemning him to prison. Must be comfortable playing a seductress. Will also play Jacob’s wife, Rachel, Joseph’s mother. PHARAOH – Good actor/singer with Tenor/Baritone range. The most powerful man in Egypt, Pharaoh is considered a god on earth. When Joseph interprets his dreams, he promotes him to a high position in the government. Pharaoh is portrayed as an Elvis Presley-style figure. BUTLER – Tenor/Baritone, played by ASHER. One of Pharaoh's servants, the Butler is in prison with Joseph, who correctly interprets his dreams, and he will be released and taken back into Pharaoh's household. The Butler tells Pharaoh about Joseph and his uncanny dream-interpreting ability. Character role with a look that contrasts with the BAKER. BAKER – Tenor/Baritone, played by DAN. Another of Pharaoh's servants, the Baker is also in prison with Joseph, who also correctly interprets his dreams and predicts this time that he will be put to death. Character role with a look that contrasts with the BUTLER. ENSEMBLE Chorus – 8 female roles portraying the wives of Joseph’s brothers and doubling as Pharaoh’s court in Egypt. Mixed vocal parts, including sopranos (to High C). Strong singers who can move well and harmonize. Includes a strong female dancer with partnering ability (Adagio) in “The Apache.” Children’s Choir Young actors (3 boys and 3 girls) who can sing and move well. The show begins with the narrator reading a story to a “classroom” of students. They will appear in multiple songs and scenes throughout the show, with featured roles at the beginning and finale. |
