Mother Play

In this raw and heartfelt new work by Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel, a mother and her two children navigate decades of struggle, identity, and survival. Set against the backdrop of shifting times and values, Mother Play is a powerful exploration of family ties and queer resilience -- unflinching, funny, and deeply human.

PHYLLIS (Female plays ages late 30s to late 70s/80s); A glamorous, exacting, and alcoholic matriarch who tries to control her children's lives. CARL (Male plays ages 15-38); Phyllis's son, portrayed as intelligent and supportive of his mother and sister. The genius in the family. Brilliant, funny, angry and fragile.

MARTHA (Female plays ages 13-50); Phyllis's daughter, a central figure in the family's story, representing memory and the audience's guide through the events. She is the younger sister, the quieter one in the family and almost as smart as her brother.
